ODR (Outrageously Dated Review): Marvel Legends Mantis Build-A-Figure

IMG_8791Yes. This is my first post. Pretty much. And, yes, it’s a review on a figure that came out well over a year ago. But I don’t care. Yeah, that’s right. I said it.

So, I recently picked-up the Mantis BAF from the 2nd wave of Marvel Legends Guardians of the Galaxy figures through one of the Facebook communities I’m part of. I actually have most of the wave in-package and scored some good deals during the last days of TRU. However, I couldn’t track down Adam Warlock for a good price. I think scalpers and others realized this around the same time I was trying to finish the wave up. Bad timing. But I did find myself getting a great deal used, so I’m happy. I’ll probably sell of some of the figs I have because I don’t care for some of the ones that cam in this wave. On to the review!!!

I have to say, this is a killer looking figure. Articulation is…so-so. Here’s a brief breakdown:

Sculpt–Great sculpt. Definitely looks like the character from the movie and the costume is amazingly detailed. The hands and everything else look spot-on to what you’d want from this character.

Paint–This figure soars when it comes to paint…on the costume. The face and head are a bit lacking. I think they were going for a plain look to keep the alien vibe, but the paint on mine is a bit subpar. Though, some of that could be to this being a used figure. The metallic on the costume is, heh, out of this world. Seriously, it photographs amazingly well and looks incredible in person. Hasbro gets props for getting this down, especially knowing things like Silver Surfer are on the way. Keep it up, Hasbro.

Articulation–Eh. It’s okay. Good leg movement, but other areas lack. The arms really could’ve used the double-jointed elbows that Hasbro has been keeping from us on the female figs. I’m hoping we’ll see improvement on this at SDCC this year. Pretty please!

Accessories–Well, Mantis is kind of her own accessory to the other figures in the wave. She comes with absolutely nothing. Which is okay since she really didn’t use anything in the movie or in Infinity War.

Overall–Mantis is a good fig. A little underwhelming for a BAF, but for the $40 or so I paid, well worth having on the shelf with your Guardians or in an Infinity War display (where I’ll likely have her). Don’t expect too much articulation-wise, but if you want a poseable, stellar-looking addition to a couple groups in your Marvel Legends you won’t regret it.

Keep collecting and connecting, kids.
